Inaugurated on May 18, 1388 by a decree issued by Voivode Mircea cel Batran, the Cozia Monastery was an important center of Romanian culture. Since 1415 functions here a religious school, one of the oldest institutions of its kind on the Romanian territory. The historical monument has a specific religious architecture in Byzantine style and with a Brancoveanu porch added during the reign of Voivode Constantin Brancoveanu. The church was painted during the reign of Voivode Mircea cel Batran, all the subsequent restorations tried to respect the original picture. The church houses the remains of its founder, Voivode Mircea cel Batran, and the relics of the mother of Voivode Mihai Viteazul (Michael the Brave).
